It was always the small things Laurel missed about her home in Ottery St Catchpole the most. Of course, some of the things she missed she had anticipated and was fairly obvious. Her parents for one and their home. It was the things like the smell of varnish on the floor mixed with the scent of baking bread which she longed for most when she had spare time and brought on the home sickness. Whilst she was at Hogwarts, she couldn't just go off and lie in a bale of hay. It just wasn't practical, and there was a distinct lack of hay around Hogwarts for the most part. Those things usually didn't bother Laurel though. There was nearly always something else going on at school to distract her from that kind of negative thoughts.
She shifted slightly from her position sitting cross legged on the grass to lean forward slightly. Gently she plucked a stem from the ground and raised it to her nose. Rella fell backwards so that she was lying down, staring the empty skies. There wasn't a cloud insight which was a minor disappointment for Laurel. No cloud gazing today. The scent of the thin blade of grass was comforting to her. It reminded her of the daytime, days with plenty of sun and light, her kind of days. The sky above her was grey and the light was already drawing in. She unconsciously felt inside her pocket to find the comforting smoothness of one of the candles she always kept on her. It was obvious that night would not truly fall for some time yet but she was already beginning to feel uncomfortable. Shivers were travelling up her spine at the mere thought of the encroaching darkness.
Rella sat up again, bringing her knees right up against her cheek in a tight ball. She squeezed her eyes shut and attempted to slow her breathing. Her eyes flickered open eventually as something alarmingly obvious hit her. It wasn’t dark yet, it was just her imagination getting carried away with itself as normal. A faint smile tugged at her lips, a smile which made Laurel look incredibly weary. Even though she had now registered that it was still light she had to keep on reassuring herself inside her head. Rella shook her head at herself before letting the now crushed blade of grass fall to the ground.

Jake had been spending most of the day indoors, talking with Professor Gryffindor and practicing his spellwork. He enjoyed his magic, it was something that needed focus, hard work, and practice in order to master. He also enjoyed seeing the various things that could be accomplished with magic. Turning things into something else, enchanting items to make it better, almost anything was possible with magic. But even with the limitless potential of magic, Jake still loved the outdoors and straining his body with training. So after his lessons and his studying, he gathered up his bow and quiver and the enlarged bag that held his target and left the castle for the lawns.
As Jake walked through the doors he inhaled deeply, reveling in the fresh air and the soft breeze. Jake loved the outdoors. He spent most of his life in the wild, he was used to living off the land when he had to and he missed it. He looked around and found the most vacant part of the lawns, occupied by only a single girl laying in the grass. He walked over to a good, level spot and set down his bow, quiver, and bag. He opened the bag and waved his wand which caused three hay bales to float a ways off and finally a cloth target draped over top of it. When he was satisfied he closed the bag and picked up his quiver, slinging over his shoulder and then taking up his bow.
All the while Jake's black feline followed him, laying down in the grass and looking up at him as he prepared himself. She looked about, seeing the girl laying in the grass and wondering why she was all alone. After a few seconds thought she merely rolled her shoulders and continued looking about for any mice or other prey that might be wandering around. Jake looked down at her and shook his head before taking up his longbow, pulling a black feathered arrow from the quiver and fitting it to the string. He took a moment to aim down the arrow shaft at the target, pulling back the string and letting the arrow fly. He watched as the arrow stuck in the third ring from center. He growled slightly before repeating the process and getting a bit closer this time.

Laurel looked up from the grass as she heard someone coming her way. She frowned slightly, titling her head as she did so, trying to work out what he was doing here. A vague remembrance of who he was flickered across her mind. She could remember strange specifics about him although she didn't think they had ever met properly. He was a Gryffindor, one older than herself. Then there was what she could learn about him merely by watching him now. A cat person who hadn't done any archery in a long time, but quite probably liked doing it. A smile spread across her face as she watched him. There was only so long watching inanimate objects could amuse you for after all.
The bales of hay though made her heart leap in excitement. After this exercise and practice session, he probably wouldn't want them anymore. Hay was one of the things she missed about home. If she could get some off him, things might look that bit brighter. That small analogy brought another smile to her face. It certainly suited her. Bright light was far more preferable to darkness in her opinion. Her gaze turned to observe the cat for a while. It seemed to be a playful thing really. Rella's focus stayed on the cat until the whooshing of another arrow through the air drew it back to the student and his bow.
"Yes, you are," she stated clearly, loud enough that he would hear over the short distance between where she lay and he stood. It wasn't an insult, merely a statement and repetition of what he himself had said. Of course, in the past her own interpretation of her phrasing had not been that of everyone else. Such tiny things could go so horribly awry. She smiled timidly, before shifting to sit cross legged on the grass. "Would you mind if I took the hay after you're done?" she asked politely.

He looked to the girl as she spoke, in the process of pulling another arrow from his quiver. Both he and Shadow turned their attention to the girl when she affirmed that Jake was a bit out of practice. He didn't say anything back though. If he were arrogant, or hot-headed, he probably would thrown his past experiences and how often his archery skills saved his life had come in handy. But Jake was grown, and he knew better then to do something like that. Besides, it would be horribly out of character for Jake to do something like that. Not only did he hardly ever speak, he NEVER talked about his past. Especially not to someone he just met.
When she asked if she could have the hay when he was done, he merely shrugged an affirmative and fit the third arrow to the bow. He took a deep breath, pulled back the string, sighted down the shaft and let fly the arrow. This time the dull thud of the arrow hitting the target was the arrow hitting the center. He nodded and pulled out a fourth, this time taking hardly any time to aim before losing the arrow. This one missed the target completely but the loud squak of a bird said the arrow wasn't waisted. As the bird fell to the ground Shadow lept up and ran after it. Jake just chuckled and fired another arrow, hitting the bullseye again.

Laurel was instantly intrigued when he just turned to look at her briefly when she had agreed that he hadn't practiced in a while. Most guys she knew, which admittedly very few of whom she was on good terms with, would have reacted very differently. Quite a few would have shouted, some would have stalked off, she was even pretty sure that at least a few would have behaved haughtily towards her and then stalked off to cry in their dormitories. It was interesting that his response was so different to any she would have anticipated and as often happened with Rella, her mind instantly flew to the possible reasons behind it. She didn't really believe any of her own theories. It was simply her overactive imagination being given a chance to be put to use without scaring her half to death.
"Thank you," she said quietly as she stood up from her position on the ground. Laurel wasn't completely certain that the shrug had even been a positive reaction but it would have to do for now. She stared wistfully at the targets for a few moments before jerking back to reality. It was a silly wish, and a remarkably childish one at that. Who, of all the things they could pick from their home, chose a bale of hay? A small sigh escaped her lips and a frown decorated her face. If nothing else it was a remarkably peculiar way to initiate a conversation with someone. "I'm Laurel," she told him, walking fractionally closer to him but making sure to keep some space between them for fear of the flying arrows.

The girl wasn't going anywhere. Matter of fact she was actually trying to engage him in conversation. He should have expected this, he had given her a few seconds of attention and agreed to give her his hay.... which was really freakin weird. And it was inconvenient since now he would have to get new hay bales for his archery. Ah well, price for socializing. He fired a couple more arrows and came close to the center before lowering his bow and turning to look at the girl. Laurel, Laurel Lovegood. One of Professor Ravenclaw's students, which meant she was smart and clever. She seemed a little off, a little out there, but he wasn't going to hold that against her.
He wasn't sure if he wanted to introduce himself though. It wasn't like Jake to just come out and strike up a conversation. He wasn't social, he didn't like most people, and aside from his very few friends he preferred solitude. Still, he wasn't just going to ignore her, that would just be rude. Jake might seem rude most of the time, that was hardly ever the case, it was just the way most people thought of him. He took a moment to look at her, crimson eyes seeming to see right through the physical to look at her soul. He did this to everyone who made the effort to try to talk to him. Whether or not Jake could actually do this was questionable, but he did somehow seem to know things about people before he talked to them. When he seemed satisfied he inclined his head slightly.
"Jake. Nice to meet ya."
As he spoke Shadow returned, sitting down in front of Jake and dropping a dead bird with an arrow in it on the ground. She looked up at Laurel, but since she was a cat, she said nothing.

Laurel's eyes went to look at the sky, apparently ignoring the person who was talking to her. She wasn't ignoring Jake though. After all, just because she wasn't looking directly and the person speaking to her and her face appeared completely blank didn't mean she wasn't taking in the words he said. Jake's words were short and brief; he obviously wasn't a chatterbox or anything close. Laurel was tempted to sigh but kept the sound within her. It would seem rather rude after all. The conversation looked like it wouldn't last long if her assumption about him was correct. She was a fairly quiet person too for the most part. Listening was her preferred art over speaking.
At a slight rustling sound, she tore her eyes away from the darkening skies and back to look down at the ground. His cat had returned, but this time with a prize between its claws. The cat obviously hadn't done all the work though. One of Jake's arrows was lodged deep in its body. "At least the arrow went to some use," she commented lightly, turning her head to look at him now. A small smile was dancing across her lips in amusement. There was nothing really funny about the situation but for now Laurel was enjoying herself for some peculiar reason. Well, for no reason at all in truth. She was just trying to savour the moment, even if there was nothing particularly special about it. Rella had come to the conclusion not too long ago now, that she spent far too much time worrying about the negative aspects of her life and that probably wasn’t the healthiest thing she could be doing.

"Yeah, I suppose. Plus she brought the arrow back, thats always a plus."
He crouched down and held down the bird as he yanked the arrow free. He gave it a thorough look over and after seeing no damage he fit it to his bow and shot it, hitting the center of the target and smiling. He then returned to looking at the girl, hearing her laugh and wondering what she found funny. He didn't ask her though, thinking that if she wanted to share what was so funny then she would.
He pulled out his wand and gave it a wave, summoning the arrows from the target and watching as they settled themselves into his quiver. He then shrugged it off and laid it on the grass along with the bow before taking a seat. Shadow brought her catch and settled next to Jake, letting him pet her a bit as she examined the bird. Jake looked up at the sky and then to Laurel, giving her another look over before deciding to break the silence. She had gone wandering off yet, so he decided to get to know her a little bit. May as well, nothing else was going on.
